Consumer health protection is an area in which the European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines & HealthCare (EDQM) of the Council of Europe has played an active role for many years. Everyday products such as cosmetics, food contact materials and tattoo inks fall under its watchful eye. By establishing quality and safety standards and promoting their implementation through international co-operation programmes, the EDQM strives to keep these types of products safe for consumers.

In this episode, François-Xavier Lery, Head of the EDQM Pharmaceutical and Consumer Care Section, tells us how this important objective is achieved. He stresses in particular the important role that national official cosmetics control laboratories (OCCLs) play in accomplishing this mission. Working together, within the OCCL Network co-ordinated by the EDQM, over 50 OCCLs pool their resources and share knowledge and expertise on methods for testing cosmetic products. They also conduct Europe-wide market surveillance studies and conduct proficiency testing studies, in which they benchmark their capacity to obtain accurate test results.
