The European Committee on Blood Transfusion (CD-P-TS) has approved the publication of the 2016 edition of “The collection, testing and use of blood and blood components in Europe”. In total, 28 Council of Europe member states,[1] representing some 430 million inhabitants, reported annual data for 2016 by responding to a detailed survey.
As a rich source of specialised data, the 2016 report presents information on topics such as:
- the numbers of donors, their characteristics and profiles of donations;
- the use of blood and blood components for transfusion;
- donation testing strategies and screening;
- quality management-related issues;
- haemovigilance systems.
This report was made possible by the efforts of experts and colleagues in the member states who collated data at national level. It follows a series of similar reports assessing such data since 1989. Providing a unique, regular and reliable source of data enabling comparisons at international level, it is intended for all professionals working in the field of blood transfusion, including regulatory authorities, blood establishments and hospital blood banks, but may also be of interest to policy makers, students and stakeholders in the medical device and plasma industries.
